SEC Commissioner Draws National Audience to Chicago for General Counsel Program

September 01, 2005

Commissioner Annette L. Nazareth of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will present a keynote address to prominent general counsel from across the nation at an annual program that addresses current challenges facing in-house counsel and recent developments in the law.

The 44th Annual Corporate Counsel Institute will take place Sept. 29 and 30 at Northwestern University School of Law, 357 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago.

President George W. Bush appointed Nazareth to the SEC Commission in August 2005. Prior to her appointment, she served as the commission's director of the Division of Market Regulation where she was responsible for the supervision and regulation of the U.S. securities markets, principally through the regulation of brokers and dealers, exchanges, clearing agencies, transfer agents and securities information processors.

Significant initiatives adopted by the commission during her tenure include: execution quality disclosure rules, implementation of equities decimal pricing, short sale reforms, implementation of a voluntary regime for consolidated supervision of broker-dealer holding companies and modernization of the national market system rules.

Developed by general counsel from some of the nation's leading corporations, the Corporate Counsel Institute provides a format for attorneys to share experiences and identify mutual concerns. As a program sponsored by Northwestern University School of Law, the Corporate Counsel Institute is recognized for mandatory continuing legal education credit in most states.
