A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed your two-week spring break and have returned ready to wrap up the last couple weeks of the semester. This first week back will be particularly busy with the spring Law Board meeting and Wigmore Follies on Friday and Saturday; and Day at Northwestern Law on Saturday. In addition please keep these other important dates in mind:

Executive LLM in Korea Program Graduation Ceremony, March 24
While you were away, the class of 25 Executive LLM students from Korea visited Chicago to complete their final course and to celebrate their graduation. The students, Korean legal professionals working for businesses, law firms, and government agencies, have spent the past year studying in Seoul, Korea, with Northwestern Law professors. The graduation ceremony was held in Lincoln Hall on Friday. Our Class of 2007 Executive LLM students began studying in Seoul earlier this month.

Northwestern Law Hosts Nuremberg Program, March 29
The Law School will host a lecture on the German legal response to the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933 as part of a two-day city-wide event on "The Legacies of Nuremberg: 60 Years Later," organized by the Chicago Bar Association with the Chicago Public Library and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Wigmore Follies, March 31–April 1
Following a long-standing tradition, graduating students write, direct, act, and sing in Wigmore Follies, Northwestern Law's annual comedy review. This year's production, "Back to the Follies," adapts plot elements from many popular 1980s movies, including "Back to the Future," "Top Gun," "The Breakfast Club," "Sixteen Candles," "Pretty in Pink," "Footloose," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," and "Dirty Dancing."

Law Board Meeting, March 31–April 1
At the annual spring Law Board meeting, which coincides with Day at Northwestern Law and Wigmore Follies, I will meet with alumni as well as legal and business professionals to discuss and gather feedback about the basic direction of the school and implementation of the strategic plan. Members of the board will also be attending the Wigmore Follies sneak preview on Friday evening and joining the admitted students for a lunch on Saturday.

Day at Northwestern Law, Admitted Students Weekend, April 1
Hundreds of admitted students will be getting acquainted with the Law School on Saturday, April 1, when they join us for Day at Northwestern Law. They will meet with current students, faculty, and administrators, as well as potential classmates. In many cases, this is the weekend when most make the final decision to become permanent members of our community. If you happen to run into any of them, I hope you will tell them what a wonderful place Northwestern Law is.

CFJC Children's Law Pro Bono Project Reception, April 4
The Children and Family Justice Center will honor two firms, two local attorneys, and a community agency at this annual reception in recognition for their contributions to juvenile justice and education. To be honored are Kirkland & Ellis LLP; Latham & Watkins LLP; Michael Mulcahy, Vedder Price Kaufman & Kammholz; Angela Coin Vigil (JD '95), Baker & McKenzie; and Circuit Court of Cook County Probation Department Director Michael J. Rohan.

Julius Rosenthal Foundation Lecture Series, April 4–6
John J. Donohue, Leighton Homer Surbeck Professor of Law at Yale University, will deliver this year's Julius Rosenthal Foundation Lectures on "Landmines and Goldmines: Why it is Hard to Find Truth and Easy to Peddle Falsehood in Empirical Evaluation of Law and Public Policy."

Faculty Conference on Censorship and Institutional Review Boards, April 6–7
Northwestern Law, in conjunction with the Olin Program at the University of Chicago Law School, is hosting a conference to explore the threat to First Amendment and academic freedoms from Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). Conference papers will be published by the Northwestern University Law Review.

Student Leadership Retreat, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, April 6–8
At the annual Student Leadership Retreat, which will take place in Lake Geneva, Wis., student leaders will participate in numerous events, including a brainstorming session on ways to improve student life here at Northwestern Law.

Small Business Opportunity Center Hosts Entrepreneurship Conference, April 8
Prominent members of the business and legal community are expected to attend and present at this workshop conference, organized by students in the SBOC, to explore various issues related to entrepreneurship and small business. Preceding this conference, the SBOC will host a teaching workshop for law school faculty and administrators on April 7 highlighting cutting edge issues in entrepreneurship education.

Public Service Benefit Dinner, April 11
The Student Funded Public Interest Fellowship will host its Third Annual Public Service Benefit Dinner on Tuesday, April 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Law School. The event will recognize three Northwestern Law alumni—Patricia M. Logue (JD '86), senior counsel at Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund; Seymour Simon (JD '38), retired Illinois Supreme Court Justice and partner at DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary; and the late Michael F. Lefkow (JD '66), civil rights attorney—for their outstanding contributions in public service.

26th Annual Ray Garrett Jr. Institute, May 4–5
Senior officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission will take part at this annual institute, including the incoming director of the SEC's Division of Corporation Finance, as part of Northwestern Law's continuing legal education program.

Graduation Convocation for the Class of 2006, May 14
We are pleased to have Chief Judge Joel Flaum, 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, as the speaker for this year's convocation ceremony, which is scheduled for Sunday, May 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place. A reception at the Law School for graduates, friends, and family will follow.
