Allyson Bain (JD ’16) Awarded Prestigious Skadden Fellowship
Allyson Bain (JD ’16) has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Skadden Fellowship, one of only 30 awards granted for 2017 by the Skadden Foundation. For the next 2 years, she will work with the Roger Baldwin Foundation—the 501 (c)(3) arm of the ACLU of Illinois—to expand access to, and improve, mental health treatment for low-income children. In particular, Bain will focus on reducing forced institutionalization and expanding community-based mental health systems.

Alum Andrew Stroth Expands Access to Civil Rights Representation
After over a decade and a half as a successful agent, Andrew M. Stroth (JD ’99) decided he wanted to move beyond the sports and entertainment worlds, and created the Action Injury Law Group, a civil rights firm focused on filing federal Section 1983 cases on behalf of victims of police-involved shootings and injuries.

Sara Hays (JD ’89) Chosen as Law Board Chair

Natalie Maust Awarded Immigrant Justice Corps Fellowship
Recent Northwestern Pritzker School of Law graduate Natalie Maust (JD ’16) was named one of twenty-five young advocates in the Immigrant Justice Corps Fellowship Class of 2016.The two-year fellowship sends recent law graduates and clerks with a passion for justice for immigrants to host organizations in New York City. She will be joining the Legal Aid Society, the United States’ oldest and largest provider of legal aid to the indigent, in late August.

Children and Family Justice Center, Chicago Housing Authority to Launch Juvenile Reentry Assistance Program
As part of a national effort to assist young people who have had juvenile justice system involvement, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) launched a multi-state, multi-million dollar initiative to create the Juvenile Reentry Assistance Program (JRAP).

Amy Garber (MSL ’15) and Hazel Technologies awarded $500,000 at the 2016 Clean Energy Trust Challenge
A team of Northwestern University entrepreneurs—including Law School alumna Amy Garber (MSL ’15) —earned the top prize at the 2016 Clean Energy Trust Challenge, the $500,000 Illinois Clean Energy Fund Award for their startup Hazel Technologies.

The Honorable Horace Ward (JD ’59), retired federal district judge from Georgia and a giant in the civil rights movement, died on Saturday, April 23, 2016. He was 88 years old.

Christopher Grady (JD ’17), Brandon Knop (JD ’17), and Katie Stevens (JD ’18) were awarded Best Draft at the National Championship of the 7th Annual Transactional LawMeet in New York City, and finished in third place in the negotiation component.

Brendan Dassey: A True Story of False Confession
Join us as Brendan Dassey’s attorneys, Steven Drizin and Laura Nirider, discuss Brendan’s case, police interrogations, and false confessions. Using video excerpts from sixteen-year-old Brendan Dassey’s interrogation, Drizin and Nirider will explain how the powerful process of psychological interrogation can cause teenagers like Brendan to falsely confess. A panel of distinguished guests will also discuss issues raised by Brendan’s case, including the legality of certain interrogation techniques, the power of pre-trial publicity, and the impact of Making a Murderer on the justice system writ large.
