Professor Thomas Geraghty named an Illinois Laureate

Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Clinical Education Thomas Geraghty is one of a dozen lawyers named to the inaugural class of the Laureates of the Academy of Illinois Lawyers established by the Illinois State Bar Association. Geraghty, who directs the Northwestern University Legal Clinic, will be recognized be recognized at a reception to be held on Friday, December 10, by the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois Judges Association and justices of Illinois Supreme Court. The reception will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Sheraton Chicago Hotel.

 

The Academy of Illinois Lawyers was proposed by ISBA President Cheryl I. Niro and established in July by the Board of Governors to recognize outstanding members of the profession and perpetuate their records of achievement as role models. The purpose of the initiative is to focus attention on lawyers throughout the state who exemplify the character, integrity, ideals and diversity of the best of the legal profession. Laureate candidates must have practiced law primarily in Illinois for at least 25 years, during which they have personified the greatness of lawyering and helped establish its highest principles through a pervasive record of service to the law, the profession and the public.

"This honor recognizes the tremendous contribution that Tom Geraghty has made to the administration of justice in Illinois," said David E. Van Zandt, dean of the Law School. "He has been a strong advocate for justice and a leader in legal reform in areas such as the death penalty and juvenile justice. He is also a great teacher and role model for our students." Geraghty is a 1969 graduate of Northwestern Law.

Other laureates include former Governor James R. Thompson, a 1959 graduate of Northwestern Law and Martha Mills, who teaches in Northwestern's Trial Advocacy Program.
