Structured Transactions: Sports Law and Negotiations

This course introduces students to an overview of legal and business considerations in the sports industry. Students will gain a practical understanding of legal and business issues, and learn how to address those issues in drafting, with emphasis on representation agreements, personal services/endorsement agreements, sponsorship agreements, and employment agreements (agent, athlete, and coach). Within the foregoing transactional areas, focus will be placed on specific legal concepts, including agency relationships, licensing, right of publicity, contract-specific considerations, and the reduction/allocation of risk. Students will engage in mock negotiations and related class discussions, and will draft agreements based on specific “facts” provided. Materials utilized will include industry contracts and clauses from contracts, hand-selected case law and articles, and current events. Guest speakers will be brought in to provide additional industry perspectives.
