Project Management in Regulated Environment

Project management is an essential skill in all industries and environments, and it is critical for the success of projects that must address legal, privacy, policy, and other forms of regulatory requirements. Project managers must understand the impact of those requirements on their projects and then adjust their planning and delivery methods accordingly. This course equips students with the essential tools, techniques, and leadership skills to effectively manage these types of projects. This course covers the entire project management lifecycle, from initiating, through planning, delivery, and closure. Students will learn to translate strategic vision into a well-defined project scope, identifying compliance requirements to be incorporated. Students will then learn practical tools for key aspects of planning: governance, roles and responsibilities, scheduling, budgeting, quality and risk management, and communications. Students will also gain best practices for evaluating project health, communicating progress with stakeholders, supporting the team during delivery, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. Case studies based on real-world projects will be used for individual and group assignments. In addition to the mechanics of project management, students will enhance the interpersonal skills required for today’s project leaders, including project team development and leadership, collaboration, and strategic communication. This course will also introduce students to advanced topics, such as change management, tailoring for agile ways of working, and using generative AI. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead complex projects that must meet regulatory requirements to meet the organization’s goals.
