Nonprofits and Philanthropy
In this seminar we will briefly survey the law that governs nonprofit entities and charitable giving, and then we will consider several aspects of philanthropy and its legal and social implications. Who donates to nonprofits and why? What benefits do donors receive? Gifts are usually tied to purposes in perpetuity; what does perpetuity mean in the sector and are perpetual purposes a good idea? Who can change perpetual purposes and how? How does philanthropy interact with democracy in the U.S.?
