Ethical Foundations of Criminal Justice

This course will introduce students to the field of substantive criminal law through an exploration of rules for imposing criminal liability, common features of modern criminal codes, practical workings of the criminal justice system, and ethical considerations that undergird criminal law. The course will discuss specific offense definitions and defenses while focusing on doctrines with special relevance to “white-collar” crimes, including accomplice liability, attempt liability, and conspiracy. We will examine these issues through case studies that illuminate the human facets of criminal justice.
