Federal Criminal Advocacy: Charging, Detention, and Sentencing

This course is designed to develop oral and written advocacy skills within the context of the United States criminal justice system. Careers in criminal law offer unparalleled opportunities for lawyers to make arguments in court. However, less than 2% of federal criminal cases proceed to trial. Most of the advocacy work that federal prosecutors and defense attorneys do happens in other proceedings and situations. Over the course of the semester, we will explore the most common scenarios and issues that lawyers face in federal criminal practice and learn how to make effective arguments on behalf of the accused, victims, and the public.
