Eric Sirota

Clinical Associate Professor
Director of Tenant Advocacy Center

Biography

Eric Sirota joined the Northwestern Pritzker Law faculty in 2024 as a Clinical Associate Professor of Law and the Director of the Tenant Advocacy Clinic, which engages in both individual and systemic advocacy with and on behalf of tenants and tenant associations. Eric has spent his career fighting for housing equity in a wide variety of contexts. Before joining the faculty at Northwestern, Eric served as the Director of Housing Justice at the Shriver Center on Poverty Law, where he engaged in both litigation and policy advocacy to help bolster the rights of low-income tenants and advance the goals of tenant associations and grassroots coalitions. Working at the Shriver Center, for example, Eric worked with the Illinois Fair Housing Coalition to pass a state law prohibiting discrimination against Housing Choice Voucher holders, co-lead the Partnership for Just Housing, a national coalition of directly impacted and other advocates working with federal agencies to enhance housing access for people with arrest and conviction histories, and served as counsel to a number of tenant associations in their efforts to improve their living situations. Prior to starting work at Shriver, Eric worked as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Michigan Law School’s Veterans Legal Clinic, where he supervised students representing veterans facing eviction, poor living conditions, and other matters, and at the University of Illinois College of Law’s Community Preservation Clinic, where Eric worked with students representing borrowers in consumer-housing litigation. Eric has also worked as an Assistant Attorney General at the Office of the Illinois Attorney’s General’s Consumer Fraud Bureau and at Prairie State Legal Services, a Legal Aid organization serving Chicago’s collar counties, where he helped form the organization’s foreclosure defense practice during the Foreclosure Crisis. In his free time, Eric enjoys performance poetry, music, pickup basketball, and being assigned to play various roles in Frozen by his nieces.
