Beyond our Borders: A Global Legal Innovation Summit
Thursday-Friday, May 3-4, 2018
The legal industry is undergoing massive transformation, spurred by technological advances, new delivery models, a burgeoning wave of entrepreneurialism, and a new legal buy/sell dynamic. The change is occurring within the United States and across the world; it is a global phenomenon.
Northwestern Law is pleased to host a 2-day summit of global legal industry thought leaders in May in Chicago. This is a unique opportunity to hear from and engage with progressive leaders across all facets of the global legal community including: regulators, firm and in-house attorneys, technologists, legal educators, marketing and media. Discover how the legal ecosystem is being transformed across national boundaries and continents.
There is no charge for this event, but space is limited and registration is required.

Andrew Arruda
Andrew Arruda is a Canadian entrepreneur and attorney. He is Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of the artificial intelligence company ROSS Intelligence, a leader in the legal technology industry. Arruda speaks internationally on the subjects of AI, legal technology, and entrepreneurship and has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, BBC, Wired, CNBC, CBS, Bloomberg, Fortune, Inc., Forbes, TechCrunch, the Washington Post, and the Financial Times. A member of the Forbes 30 under 30 class of 2017, as well as a 2016 TED speaker, Arruda aims to forever change the way legal services are delivered. Prior to cofounding ROSS Intelligence, Arruda worked at a Toronto litigation boutique and with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Development in Lisbon, Portugal.

Eva Bruch
Eva has a Degree in Law, a PhD in Communication and an MBA. Partner at AlterWork, a consultancy company focused on innovation and digital transformation for the legal industry. She teaches about Strategic Marketing and law firm management. She has worked as a lawyer at several law firms and at a Legal Process Outsourcer as business development manager. She is the author of: “Tendencias, Marketing e Innovación en el sector jurídico” (Ed. La Ley) and coauthor of “Reflexiones sobre la importancia de la gestión en los despachos de abogados” (Ed. Thomson Reuters) and New Law New Rules: a conversation about the future of the legal industry (Beaton Capital). She is a regular speaker at congresses on the future and trends in the legal industry. She is a member of Inkietos and regularly takes part in international events on firm management.

Mark A. Cohen
Mark is a global thought leader in the legal industry. He is presently the Chair of the Advisory Board and Chief Strategy Officer at Elevate; a Distinguished Fellow at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law; a regular contributor to Forbes where he has a column on the global legal marketplace; a sought-after keynote speaker; and CEO of LegalMosaic (www.legalmosaic.com), a legal business consultancy and repository for his work. His LegalMosaic blog was recently honored by the ABA as one of the 50 outstanding worldwide legal blogs in their inaugural “Web 100.”

John Fernandez
In his new role as Global Chief Innovation Officer for Dentons, John is developing and overseeing the growth of innovative projects globally across the Firm. John has been serving as Chief Innovation Officer for Dentons' U.S. Region, and is also the Global Chair of Nextlaw Labs, Dentons' legal technology business accelerator that identifies opportunities for new technologies to deliver greater client value.
A graduate of Indiana University, John was nominated by President Barack Obama to the post of Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, leading the Economic Development Administration. Fernandez was sworn into office on September 14, 2009. As the Administrator of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), Fernandez was charged with leading the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the global economy. With over 13 years of executive experience, Fernandez has earned a reputation as a strategic thinker, creative problem solver and effective manager.
Prior to his appointment, Fernandez led the new development and acquisition team at First Capital Group, an Indiana-based real estate investment firm. Fernandez played a critical role in expanding the firm’s regional and national investment footprint.
Fernandez also served as Of Counsel for Krieg DeVault LLP, an Indianapolis-based law firm, where he advised private and governmental organizations on economic development, public finance and policy issues. Fernandez served as Bloomington, Indiana’s mayor from 1996 to 2003. With his leadership, Bloomington’s economy thrived despite facing significant changes arising from the new global economy. Fernandez worked with business and Indiana University leaders to launch Bloomington’s Life Sciences Partnership, securing more than $243 million in private investments and creating more than 3,700 jobs. He also developed an aggressive downtown revitalization plan resulting in more than $100 million in new investments.

Markus Hartung
Markus Hartung is a lawyer and mediator. He is director of the Bucerius Center on the Legal Profession (CLP) at Bucerius Law School, Hamburg. His expertise in the framework of the CLP lies in market development and trends, management and strategic leadership as well as corporate governance of law firms and business models of law firms with regard to digitalisation of the legal market.
He is Chair of the Committee on Professional Regulation of the German Bar Association (DAV).
As a lawyer he focuses on conflict management, regulatory matters and professional indemnity issues. In addition, he advises law firms in strategy and management questions and coaches partners in management functions.
He is a regular lecturer and conference-speaker on leadership, management topics and professional ethics and has written numerous articles and book chapters on these topics. He is i.a. co-editor and author of “Wegerich/Hartung: Der Rechtsmarkt in Deutschland” (“The Legal Market in Germany”) which came to the market in early 2014 and has developed into a standard reference for the German legal market. He is also Co-author of “How Legal Technology Will Change the Business of Law”, a joint study of The Boston Consulting Group and the Bucerius Law School. His recently published book “Legal Tech. Iohann Le Frapper
Iohann Le Frapper is the group general counsel at Pierre Fabre, a French healthcare company with a global footprint. He is the past immediate chair of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) global board of directors, and vice-chair of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Commission on Corporate Responsibility and Anti-corruption. He recently joined the Advisory Board of Elevate Services, a law company. Iohann has a wealth of experience in corporate and commercial transactions across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and North America. He offers counsel on corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, compliance and litigation, among other issues. France is his home country but he lived and worked several years in Asia and Middle-East.

Crispin Passmore
Crispin Passmore is Executive Director of Policy at the SRA. He is responsible for reducing regulatory burdens, reforming education and training and improving the regulator’s focus on consumers. Crispin previously held posts at the Legal Services Board, Legal Services Commission and Coventry Law Centre.

Joek A.A. Peters
Joek has over 25 years experience working in the media industry and is an innovator at heart. As a graduate student at Erasmus Law School he started a media company and published the first ‘Glossy' magazine for Legal professionals in the Netherlands and developed the first online legal platform LegalWeb (1994). After his graduation, the Magazine was sold to Wolters Kluwer and GlobalXS Internet bought LegalWeb. Instead of pursuing a legal career, Joek became a Publisher at Reed Elsevier (now the RELX Group). He continued his career at Wolters Kluwer, on of the largest publishing/media companies in the world, where he held several senior management positions and became a divisional board member (Legal Division) and was responsible for Kluwer Legal Software|Publishing|Training|Education. Besides his daily work he chaired the e-Innovation group ‘Northern Europe' and was responsible for several legal x-border online and software innovations. After a sabbatical leave Joek decided to leave the corporate structures and start a new venture in the Business of Law: ‘LegalBusinessWorld'. LegalBusinessWorld.com is an open platform, incl. eMagazines and eBook on the business of law and the development of the legal profession. With over 25 years of experience in growing businesses he regularly lectures and speaks about innovation, change and disruption. Joek is a trusted M&A advisor for investment firms on Media and Tech in the legal market. He loves skiing, sailing and is has a passion for human behavior in changing environments.

Daniel B. Rodriguez
Daniel B. Rodriguez was appointed Dean and Harold Washington Professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in January 2012. Before joining Northwestern, Rodriguez served as Minerva House Drysdale Regents Chair in Law at the University of Texas-Austin; as a Research Fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy; as Dean and Warren Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law; and, as a Professor of Law at University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He has been a visiting professor at Columbia, Virginia, USC, and the Free University of Amsterdam, and has given endowed lectures worldwide, including most recently at the University of Arkansas (Hartman Hotz Lecture), UC Berkeley (Jefferson Memorial Lecture), ITAM-Mexico City, and Renmin Law School in Beijing, China. Rodriguez received his law degree, with honors, from Harvard Law and his undergraduate degree from California State University of Long Beach.
Dean Rodriguez’s principal academic work is in the areas of administrative law, local government law, statutory interpretation, federal and state constitutional law and the law-business-technology interface. Rodriguez was the 2014 President of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) and is currently serving as a council member of the American Law Institute, on the governing council of the American Bar Association Center on Innovation, on the Board of Directors of the American Bar Foundation, and as an advisor to ROSS Intelligence, Inc.

Laura van Wyngaarden
Laura van Wyngaarden is an entrepreneur and expert in artificial intelligence and legal technology. She’s the COO of Diligen, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) company transforming the way lawyers review contracts and a pioneer in the LegalTech space. Laura is passionate about the connection between technology and human work, seeking to identify and explore innovative ways to reduce time and improve accuracy of human tasks.
At Diligen, Laura has built, from the ground up, one of the fastest growing legal AI solutions; in less than a year, hundreds of lawyers have adopted Diligen’s contract review platform including at some of the largest law firms and corporate legal teams in North America. A key step in contract review is reviewing documents for key issues and producing contract summaries – a step can take a team of lawyers weeks to complete. Using machine learning, Diligen makes this process dramatically faster and more accurate.
Prior to founding Diligen, Laura was the Managing Director of Distility, a marketing agency specializing in brand strategy and brand identity. At Distility, Laura oversaw operations and was responsible for company strategy as a member of the leadership team. Through her work at Distility, Laura helped businesses in biotech, entertainment and real estate to establish compelling and authentic brand identities.
Laura is a frequent speaker about entrepreneurship and start-ups, business, artificial intelligence, legal tech, and the impact that AI and other technologies will have on the future of work. She has been featured in Precedent Magazine, Artificial Lawyer, Lawyer’s Daily, Analytics Insight, The National Law Journal, High Performance Counsel, Canadian Lawyer, CCCA Magazine and more. Laura has spoken at various industry events, including TechTO and Venture Out.
Laura holds undergraduate and honors degrees from the University of Cape Town and a Masters from Oxford. She tweets as @laurawyngaarden about legal technology, artificial intelligence and the future of work.
