I decided to enroll in the MSL because of its interdisciplinary nature. As an undergrad, I focused on interdisciplinary degrees within the sciences, combining physics, chemistry, and biology. However, I wanted to combine my interdisciplinary science knowledge with business knowledge, and this degree provided me the perfect opportunity to be able to do so.

In considering graduate school options, I wanted a program that would help me differentiate my skillset in the de-siloed, modern corporate world. The MSL degree focused at the interdisciplinary junction of law, business and technology, while building upon the diverse STEM backgrounds of its students. Students in the MSL program have access to the incredible Northwestern Law faculty along with adjunct professors from the Kellogg School of Management, McCormick School of Engineering and the professional legal space.

I chose Northwestern Law's MSL program because I wanted to jumpstart my path toward becoming a talented entrepreneur. Before applying to the program, I had already built personal momentum, starting a small business on my own and taking a class to write my first business plan (yes, in that order). I realized how lost I was, and I was eager for mentorship. When I saw the MSL program offered legal and business training for people with backgrounds like mine, I knew I had to try for it. I was so excited I wrote "MSL" on my refrigerator before even applying.

Learn about Eric’s experience with an independent research project during his time in the MSL.

Current Position: Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Baron Travel Philippines

I enrolled in the MSL program to complete a triumvirate of disciplines: business, engineering, and law. Throughout my academic journey and my professional career in banking, I realized that the law was an integral part of any business or venture. In both corporate and entrepreneurship settings, the phrase "consult a lawyer" always comes up. I've found that the MSL demystifies the process – I have learned what it means to think like a lawyer, and I take this with me into business settings. Learning about the legal framework in a business context has been completely eye-opening and enriching.

When considering a master's degree, I was seeking to pivot my career, address knowledge and skill gaps, and feed my academic curiosity. At the time, I was over 13 years into a professional career as an engineer and manager in information technology and also as a military officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. With the MSL, I found an academically challenging opportunity to gain exposure and expertise in fields that were important to me.

I took a drug discovery class as an undergraduate; that was where I learned about all the different fields that intertwine with science – fields I had not been aware of previously. Healthcare law, health regulation, and patent law are what specifically drew me into the MSL program.

Mical

Mical

Degrees Earned: BS, Biology/Biological Sciences, Saint Leo University

Current Position: Manager, M&A Corporate Transactions, VillageMD

I enrolled in the MSL program because I felt like it was the best next step to help me reach my dreams. When I first started looking at the MSL program, I was working as a medical scribe at an emergency department in Washington, DC, after having graduated with a major in biology. I had planned to go to medical school, but needed a year off to take the MCAT and complete the application process.

Working as a scribe solidified for me that medical school was not my preferred route. My experience working so closely with physicians, nurses, and medical techs, combined with advice and knowledge from the many medical students and residents with whom I interacted, convinced me that medical school was not the right path for me.

Lo and behold, an email from the MSL program appeared in my inbox and that was it! Knowing that I did not want to be a physician, but also that I wanted to stay in healthcare, the MSL seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to gain interdisciplinary understanding and exposure to different areas of healthcare.

As I was finishing up my PhD, I knew I wanted a career beyond the laboratory that would include exposure to emerging developments in science, allow for interactions with budding scientists and experts in all fields of biomedicine, and put me in a translational role that would allow me to utilize my full skill set.  I concluded that law would be a great avenue to explore: my understanding of cancer biology could bring a different perspective to the ever-changing healthcare and patent law landscapes. The MSL degree offered aspects of intellectual property and regulation that helped me transition from academia to industry and policy. Along with the prestige of obtaining a degree from Northwestern, the MSL program offered relevant, hands-on coursework that prepared me for the next stage of my career. I now have options that I didn’t have with the PhD alone.
